It's my first time going to Genting Highland, and a rather long distance to KL in a coach bus. We had packed our bags the night before. I decided to bring my gay, purple luggage trolley bag though it was less than half full, cos in case anyone in the family needed extra space cos they bought stuff, would come in useful. Looking at their bags, I realized mostly they overpacked and no extra space in their bags. I subscribe to the way of just a hand and a luggage, with 4 wheels and packed minimal with extra space. This is after traveling abroad a few times and coming to realize the importance of having free hands instead of using too small a travel bag and ending up with 2-3 bags in hand. Unfortunately my parents still travel like that.
Got up at 5.30am, got ready by 6.10am and took a cab down. We ate breakfast and I headed to take the bus no. But as the time neared, don't see the bus. So I went to the office again to enquire very specifically where the boarding point was. We loaded up and headed off punctually at 7.30am. I was just seated then the stomachache began... Mom blamed it on me eating half-boiled eggs, I blamed it on having breakfast but no time for the digestion and subsequent clock-work bowel. Basically I contemplated hanging until we reached all the way to Genting but thankfully, the SG customs had a big and clean toilet. Decided to settle it instead cos the journey ahead was several hours, in not-so-clean Msian toilets. I ran back to the bus and my sis told me, I held up the bus... Bo bian but felt so much better.
Later in the journey, the meal stop in Yong Peng, I didn't dare eat anything heavy. Ate something light, very thin waffle biscuit. The coffee flavor is better than the chocolate. Also drank minimal water though they were at least 6 toilet stops along the way. We arrived at this very steep hill that had 20km of winding roads. You could feel the ears popping as he bus ascended up the steep roads with crazy angles. There were like 90 degree turns left and right, 270-360 degree turns, winding turns. Looks like a route out of the Daytona game. We arrived safely by about 2.10pm.
We had to take our luggage and find the hotel. Cos previously my mom and sis stayed at First World which is just beside the bus terminal but this time is Resort Hotel, so we had to follow the signs. The covered walkway has a bit of an incline and shortly after we walked, my dad lagged behind. Cos he brought this big bag hat is carried type and his legs are weak. So I end up with putting his heavy bag on my trolley and dragging the suddenly-turned very heavy luggage up the inclined pathway. We walked and found the hotel. By about 2.45pm, we could check-in but as the room not yet house-kept, we couldn't sleep on the bed etc.
We headed out to look for a meal, an late lunch or early dinner of sort. We weren't familiar but were not keen to walk back to First World cos the shopping plaza is there too. So we explore another path. Immediately up the escalator we saw a buffet offering. KIV, walked on a bit, but the food court was closed, saw the first of 3 Casino entrances, and a two-way branch, went left and saw the gondola skyway to head downhill to the temple and small town before the hill. We saw a small eatery, a small hot dog shop, 龟林糕 shop and nothing much. My dad suggested to go back to that buffet place we saw initially. We suspected his legs tired so just do as he says. Later we can explore after a full stomach and settle dad in his room.
Hi-tea was available and we were in time, and could eat until 5.30pm. It was near 4pm then. Basically I piled my plate with food like nasi lemak, curry and was so full after that. We all were hungry from the journey. We ate and later sat up til 5.30pm, then head back to the cleaned rooms. Rested and bathed first. Later about 8pm plus, I headed out with my sis. My parents stayed in their room.
I told my sis, we should check out that right turn at the cross-road. Saw Macs and KFC, a large arcade. Headed up the escalator and saw several restaurants. The Coffee Terrace that my mom wanted to eat at, and many more restaurants. We ended up at the Highland Hotel, the posh 5 stars one. Resort is 4 stars and First World is 3 stars. Retraced our steps to the Arcade and found a path via escalators that leads to the First World shopping area. Basically food is very very over-priced in Genting. A chicken rice cost you RM$15. Easily a meal costs you RM$30++ for very simple food. Fast food meals cost about RM$20 for something that usually costs RM$13-14 in other parts of Msia. A buffet dinner costs about RM$55-65++ onwards. So every food place we walked past, I looked through the prices, remembering the more economical and value ones. Though there were shops, the clothes are casual, nothing like the attas shopping belt in RWS. So we were still too full, didn't eat anything else.
There was nothing much to do except go into the Casino. I had made 1 card earlier after our hi-tea dinner. We went into Monte Carlo casino and I had to queue for 30mins to make a card to store my money for slots or table winnings. In the First World area, in StarWorld casino, I had to make another card. Took about 20mins. But later cannot transfer $$ into the card, so I queued again and cashed out. Decided not to play there. My sis lost RM$20 playing in StarWorld. We headed back to Monte Carlo casino near our hotel and I tried some jackpot slots. Went to the 2-cents per line slots. If you bet 1 line, cost 2 cents, next there's 3 lines 6 cents, 5 lines 25 cents, 9 lines etc. Depending on diff machines, diffent starting bet per line and some machines have up to 60 lines? So I lost RM$10 a 5-cents slots. Tried another 2-cents one and an uncle sitting beside actually taught me how to use the gamble function to up my winnings but I didn't win much and lost another RM$10. Finally I went to the same type my sis was playing. I put in RM$10 and almost immediately won RM$10. If I had stopped there, my nett loss would have been RM$10 but I continued and lost that and put in another RM$10, which I also lost for a grand total of RM$40. My sis won RM$20 back for a zero nett loss. We headed back. My first attempt at slots failed miserably and I remembered the experience of losing SGD$80 in Macau at the tables. Decided I won't play anymore. Already made my 'contributions' to RWG, dont want to lose anymore. Not worth throwing more money after this lost money.
The next morning, we woke up about 9.30am and parents went out to explore. They ate biscuits already and wanted to eat lunch together. We had to settle for eating my 旺旺仙贝 and half a focaccia bread. I more keen to eat breakfast out but bo bian. We showed my parents the right-turn from yesterday. My dad wanted to eat KFC, so just entertain him and eat there. My 2 piece meal cost almost RM$19 but filling. My dad ate a 3 piece meal. Mom ate a small burger, sis ate a zinger meal. We walked a bit to show them the restaurant belt with the 5-star hotel. Man outside the enclosed space was freezing cold. It was 18.6 degrees! I was shivering when the blast of cold air blasted me when the hotel lobby doors in Highland opened. It's very misty outside at times, depending on the humidity. We headed separate ways, Mom n sis went to casino. I left with dad and told him I will show him the escalator way we discovered yesterday. Walked with my dad to First World Plaza, he looked at the food prices as I did when we passed by the fast food and restaurants. Later we went into the casino and observed some games at the tables. Saw a guy win at this wheel of fortune thingy. Observe this '3 picture' game. Tried to figure out the rules by observing a few rounds. Asked my dad if he wanted to gamble, he declined, he said he better not start, later get addicted. True enough. After that we walked back to the hotel rooms by 2pm.
I rested a bit and headed out with sister again. We planned to go to Coffee Terrace for buffet dinner cos my mom went before and she very keen. I wanted to go to the souvenir shop but it was closed for stock taking. We headed back to First World. Both of us didn't want to play the theme park - indoors or outdoors. You have to pay for the all-day passes for either or both. The outdoor park looked dated and old. Plus I have turned chicken officially for such rides after myast in Kl subway lagoon that many years ago. The same for the indoor rides. Maybe 1-2 looked interesting, like a slow ride around the top of the mall but to have to pay a full-day pass for that alone is not worth it. On the agenda was bowling or possibly karaoke. Settled for bowling first. Just RM$10 for 2 games, shoes RM$3, socks RM$2. So we played 2 sets for Rm15 each. Man I suck at bowling and gutter alot. My score was only 62 pins. Each won a game. Continued on, went souvenir shop, surprisingly very little stuff unlike the RWS with so many casino theme stuff. Bought a RW keychain for RM$9.90 and a magnet with the view of Genting Highland RM$4.90 Really nothing else to buy. We were tiring. I suggested Baskin Robbins cos the price is relatively cheap by Genting prices and even converting back to SGD also cheaper than SG prices. The one in First World Plaza had little left, so we headed to the one near the Skyway. I ate a single scoop with cone for RM$9.50, my sis had a double junior scoop with cone for RM$10.90. Happily eating it and then I dabao some 凉茶 for myself RM$6 for 2 cups. Headed back to the hotel room to rest. By 5pm, we went to Coffee Terrace for buffet dinner. Pricey RM$65++ adult but my parents got senior citizen discount of 30%. We ate and ate but don't think got the value cos no sea food. Later prawns appeared but by then super full. I ate a plate of 3 sushi with roe, a carimari ring, several slices of salmon sashimi, 2 tempura veg, a second plate of roasted beef with black pepper and BBQ sauce, a third plate of a portion of steamed chicken and a portion of sesame roasted chicken, a plate of dessert: a raspberry mousse tapas, a caramel cream with coffee cake tapas, a small cheese cake, a larger slice of rich n dense chocolate cake, a quarter of a walnut cupcake and a half of a slice of mousse cake slice. Last plate is a plate of papaya, red and yellow watermelon and a quarter dragon fruit. Definitely exceeded calories, almost 100% overshoot the daily calories! Sian.
After that we walked around a bit, then I wanted to head back. Didn't want to go casino or stuff. Much prefer a warm bath and relax in the room watching tv. My dad followed my mom n sis to go to the Monte Carlo and the third casino Circus in Highland Genting. By 9.30pm, they came back, lost RM$20 and RM$30. I was still the greatest loser at RM$40. Watched tv until very late n fell asleep.
Woke up next day 9.30am and I started packing. Parents ate biscuits again n not heading out for breakfast. I asked my sis if she wanted anything cos I intend to walk nearby to dabao something like a hotdog cos I want to make sure I ate something, then have time to go to the toilet and not wait until lunch then gotta check out and have to go to the toilet then. I walked quickly over and dabao 2 hotdogs, RM$7.90 each and I bought a bottle of oolong RM$4 and a can of root-beer RM$3.50. Hers was a NY hotdog, relish, dog, mustard n tomato sauce.
Mine is a german style - Dangley doodle, hotdog with mash potato and chilli flakes. Gobbled it down and washed down with the rootbeer. Then bathed and packed up. About 11.15am, slowly went to check-out which was surprisingly fast, just return the card keys. Huh? Okay deposit the luggage at the counter and headed for lunch. Again KFC cos dad wanted to eat and kept saying how other restaurants costs alot n don't taste the same etc etc. Went there but I was still too full from the late breakfast to eat. Mom ate a small burger. They wanted to walk around and go casino, agree to meet 45mins later. I got a drink so that my dad won't feel so uncomfortable being the only one eating. RM$5.30 for a regular ice-lemon tea. Then my dad no teeth to eat the coleslaw and the breast, passed it to me. Okay ate it so he won't keep asking me to eat though I mentioned I wasnt hungry cos of the late breakfast a few times. He mentioned he found a few small shops at the basement of the Resort hotel and he wanted to buy some souvenirs there. We walked over, I bought 3 pic post cards, 2 of KLCC and the twin towers cos the shots were nicely taken and a reminder I've been there before. A third card of Melaka, a reminder I've been there too. Too bad no Genting one. Cost RM8 plus a chewing gum RM$2. We met up and my mom n sis went to the provision shop too. After that we collected our luggage and walked over to the First World Plaza. I was thanking my stars I brought a 4-wheel trolley cos I lugged with my dad's heavy carry bag and it was heavy to pull along but using 4 wheels, can push effortlessly unless there's an incline. Reached and sat down at the lobby to wait,
1.5hrs. With toilet breaks between, walking a bit, I walked to the bus counter to check about 1.30pm but was told to come back at 2.30pm. Bought a Starbucks Green Tea Latte Grande n sipped it over time. My mom n sis ate some bread they bought nearby. By 2.30pk, we walked over to the bus terminal, got the bus no, waited for the doors to open n board.
The road down is very steep and super sharp 270-360 degree turns at least ten times. Rapid descending meant my ears kept popping and the sharp left n right turns in quick successions meant got dizzy. Lucky nothing solid in stomach. After we got down the hill, I was fine. We had fewer toilet stops and the meal stop at Yong Peng about 7pm, I ate sizzling plate rice, dabao some waffle biscuits. Reached sg by 8.30pm, home about 9 plus. Glad to be home. Dieting to get back all the over-calories a daunting task. Will try to restart gym too. This trip I spent really little, about RM$300 almost all on food. All-in about SGD$282, only more expensive than Melaka cos of the transport and accommodations, all in SGD. In the e d, my sis lost RM$30, mom lost RM$50.
I've realized I have no luck at gambling in casino. 'Gambling' in stock markets, I am okay. Today I took out the casino chip keychain I bought in Macau and the RW keychain and put on my personal bag, a reminder I shouldn't gamble in casino. Tables I lost SGD$80, slots I lost RM$40 (SGD$16.60) A fifth of the Macau losses but I am not willing to lose more just to get it back. A small price to pay for a slot experience and a lesson about gambling in casino.
The sturdy oak Tree has fallen and the aged Saru has left the land of the natto beans behind. What else awaits in the uncertain future?

Malacca trip - itself and after
In the end, they came quite late, close to 6.30pm, I had waited and waited impatiently and getting really tired cos of the emotionally exhausting final day plus waiting around with no indication of what time they would arrive. I called up the Baba House to check on the reservation, enquire about the extra mattress and amend the expected time of arrival. Luckily I called, got them to set up the extra mattress b4 we arrive and check-in cos after 11pm, nobody around to do that. Also check-in timing late np. After that still no news, I went to lie down a bit. Been waiting too long since 4.30pm.
Lay down a bit then got Whatsapp msg about meeting at a nearby 7-11 etc. Getting irritated cos it won't be the first time I was asked to go somewhere to be picked up, only to have to wait longer outside. Replied that I rather be picked up before goig anywhere since they don't know my area. Finally arrived and I headed downstairs. But I tried hard to keep my irritation to myself cos don't want it to spoil the trip. We drove to a nearby petrol kiosk, pumped petrol and bought a cashcard. Settled then got on the way.
We got pass the customs quickly with no hiccup, headed to Jusco Tebrau for dinner at A&W. I had a corney dog, with large curly fries and a large root-beer float. No wonder I busted the calories on Fri severely (region of over 90% over) basically I almost ate double my calories... But my holidays just started, enjoy now, suffer later. Saw the sweet potato and bought 2 scrawny ones as my snack. Tab forbade me from buying a huge amount cos we all were sleeping in the same room so sweet potato fart is not welcomed. Quetzal was tempted by durian puff, also not allowed to buy by Tab. We set off on the journey after dinner and toilet trip.
The journey was alright, we chatted about many stuff to help keep awake and reached the hotel without much glitch. Check-in and went to the room to drop our stuff, then headed out. It was almost 12am then. We walked over to the Jonker area with the open-air hawker set-up and the night bazaar, but all were closing. So we walked a short while then headed back. Watched a big of tv then it was lights-out. In the dark, on the mattress on the floor, I was almost asleep then I was woken by loud snoring... I tried to go back to sleep but it was too loud for me to do so. I tried sleeping on my side, pillow cover one ear, my finger cover the other. But still can hear clearly and still loud enough for me to hear and not sleep. Tried relaxin myself to try to sleep but couldn't. I then tried to cover both my ears with my hands and sleep in that position but though the snores were much less audible, it was uncomfortable for me and I could hear my own loud heartbeat... Shit! I must buy ear-plugs and put in travel bags. Thus I lay awake until 3.30am plus before the snores died and became normal breathing. I did doze off only to be woken up by snores (not as loud as initial 2nd one) and I looked at my watch, it was only 6.45am. So I lay there thinking that my norm waking time for work is 7.15am, so I'll lie until then, then get up, wash-up and go for breakfast without disturbing as much as I could. I had to switch on one light, went toilet, wash-up, and changed. Quetzal was woken up by the light and me, so she went to park her car in the hotel carpark after I told her I saw 2 empty lots. She returned and I headed out, told them I would be back around 10am.
When I left the room, outside the skies was nicely lit up already. It was still early, 7.30am plus so I killed some time by exploring around the hotel, some other wing, taking some pics. Until it was 8am, I went to the cafe to redeem the breakfast. Simple 4 dishes; scrambled eggs, toast, fried noodles and sausage. Happily piled on the egg on the toast, but some sausage n noodle to try, not as nice. Asked for ketchup from the friendly Malay lady who operates the cafe. She explained if I don't eat-in, can exchange for a canned or bottle drink. I drank a cup of kopi-o to keep awake and bought a can of coke lite from her. After that, walked out to explore the streets cos I had already finished exploring the interior.
Walked in one direction down the street, the sunlight was gentle and it was cooling. Walked down and looked at the shophouses, many were closed but some were open. This is the thing about Msia, there are some shops catering to the early birds especially some food. I walked down Tan Cheng Lok street and saw more motels, restaurants etc. Then turned to back and kinda saw the Casa hotel. Walked back and decided to try this wanton shop I saw. Quite a few locals were eating and dabaoing. I wasn't as full from the earlier breakfast, decided to try it. Ordered a small one and iced coffee. Taste-wise cannot compare to sg standard but I can taste the 'homely 古早' taste. In that aspect, I think it's slightly better than the wanton noodles in my hometown Muar. After eating, paying RM$5.10, I walked on. Wow, double breakfast. I walked towards Jonker, deciding to go left first. As I was walking, saw the Guan Yingel temple there, walked in and bought 2 lamps to light. Lit incense and made a donation. Was told a sad tale by the aunty manning the temple cos one disheveled old woman stood outside the temple doors and was reciting the scriptures vigorously. Said my prayers, lit incense and left. Felt sad for the plight of that woman. I decided to walk the lane that had slot of pineapple tart shops. Some were open but I don't have stomach for it. Bought water and walked on. I actually came upon a kumpung area and two other temples. I recognize one temple as the one I visited with my mom and her friend when we first went to Malacca together many many years ago. I think I was maybe pri or lower sec then. Took pics and walked on. Then as I was walking to another lane, this old man on bicycle rode beside me and begged for RM$5 for a meal. I had noticed him earlier, he did the same to a car parking beside the temple... I shook my head and walked off, he followed a bit behind and shortly I was back in Jonker. He rode ahead and tried the same to a car parked with a girl inside. Kinda sad to see this too. It's like you are hat old, 60s or older? Begging. It reminds me not to fall into that state when I grow older. I walked along the Jonker unbothered by anyone and around 9.45am, some souvenir shops were open. Walked into 2, bought some magnets, key-chains. By the time I reached the hotel, it was 10.15, I wasn't sure if I should head up to the room. What if both are still sleeping? So I went to the toilet downstairs and surfed the Wi-fi, that's when I saw a WhatsApp ms and realized reception is strongest in the lobby. Went back to the room, both up. Waiting for the lift, met Tab and Quet, got the card, dropped off my souvenirs and came down again. They were worried about me being kidnapped cos I was late, 10.30am then instead of 10am. Told them I wasn't sure if I headed back, they would be awake. But we decided that to set timing to return to meet up and be punctual cos there's only one cardkey.
After Quet finished her breakfast, I followed as they walked around. Showed them some shops and sights I found earlier. We ended up eating at Bibik for the Chendol, a welcome food under the then 11.30am sun. It was getting warmer. By noon, I took out the umbrella cos Malaysian sun is unrelenting by 11am-4.30pm, from my own experience. We tried to get in to eat at a Peranakan family style eatery but it was full with crkwds waiting. We walked to another featured on the map provided by the hotel, we into one near the hotel and it was very big, got enouh seats. The peranakan food was good too, not
expensive. Good service, lots of Ang Moh. After lunch and two ice Chinese tea, I wanted to go back to the hotel cos first, I had been exploring, walking around since 8.30am and second the
sun was getting intensely hot. 2pm by then. I wanted to rest off, wait about 5.30-6pm for another round. They wanted to explore, I lent them my umbrella and headed back. Took a leisurely long shower with hot then end off with cold shower. Felt more refreshed. Laid down and watched tv until I dozed off...
Woke up by a series of knocks, a voice saying room service. I opened the door and told him no need. Shortly after, they returned. Apparently, they came back shortly about 3.30pm, knocked, banged and shouted but I didn't open. So they thought I went out and both went for the massage offered by the hotel. Ops... I was really knocked out despite the 2 coffee and 2 coke lite n 2 Chinese tea drunk.
We rested a bit and headed to a lane behind the hotel where there's a bazaar of sort that locals buy and eat. The tourists go to the Jonker one, the locals head to this one. We walked over and Tab bought a Tornado (potato tornado) that comes with 3 sauces : cheese, chili and mayo for just RM$1. It was really good. We walked on and I saw this stall selling fried chicken. You just pick which parts and pay. Wings, thighs or breast. I bought a wing and a drumstick, offered to Quet cos I know how much she likes chicken. She ate the drumstick and I took the wing. OMFG, it was delicious!!! Tender, juicy and crispy and the batter was so tasty. It beats KFC. I can eat it without going for the sauce. That's how good it was. We came to Charlie's nonya and I bought a Nonya popiah large. Shared and ate it. Pretty good. We walked on and bought a sugar cane drink each to wash it down. On the way back, we bought more chicken but mostly breast and a few wings left. The drumstick sold out. I bought a tornado too. We ate happily on the veranda at the back of the hotel. Man, really cheap and great food.
Then a short trip to the room to drop stuff, wash oily hands and went to the Jonker again, this time for the night bazaar. We came across huge crowd and the performance on the permanent stage. We found seats at the recommended Fried Egg Oyster stall. Tab had fried kway tiao, Quet and I shared a big plate of oyster egg. It's really nice and tasty, lots of egg and not so much starch. There were Chinese oldies being sung on the stage nearby, man... After that, I bought a pineapple slice and a coke lite. Cos food so far lacks vegetables and fruits. No stomachache, so no prob. We walked on. I didn't buy anything much after the earlier morning of walking around. Many similar offerings. Thereafter I just eat and eat. So that was our dinner. Then they showed me how they walked to near the bridge in the afternoon, showed me the famous chicken rice stall I was telling them I wanted to try. Tab bought a t-shirt for her dad. Quetzal's tart shop wasn't open. Then we walked back , stopping at the river to look a bit. Made it back to the hotel. Used the Wi-fi in the reception area then headed back to the room.
Showered and changed. Watched Wolverine on tv. Both slept before the movie even reach the last bit. I turned down the volume but continue watching. At 12am, still awake, so continued to the next movie: James Bond, the old old ones. I fell asleep watching cos it's kinda boring. Woke up 3am plus and switched off tv. Fell back to sleep.
Woke up at 7.30am, washed up and headed for breakfast at 8am. My plan was to walk to that Chicken Rice Ball shop since I now know where it is. From my experience, it's eaten for breakfast n lunch at least, so should be open then. Had the usual 4 dishes plus sliced tomatoes, cucumber and baked beans. I went western. Took scrambled egg, toast, baked beans and the sliced veg plus teh kosong. Bought another coke lite Was finished up when Tab walked in. Waited for her to finish then asked what her plan was? To go on her own, or follow me? I told her I wanna check out shop. Can dabao to eat. So we walked over. Saw an unexpected sight. It was a morning antique bazaar along the stretch leading into Jonker. We walked and looksey. Then when we reached that famous chicken rice ball shophouses, the queue was short. I asked tab if eat or dabao, she got space in stomach to eat another breakfast? In the end we joined the queue, was let in within 2-3mins. There were tables but were filling up fast. We ordered for 2 pax and waited. Posing and taking pic for successfully entering and eating at the famous one. It came. The riceballs were superb and very flavorful. The chili is nice and different from sg ones. The chicken not so tender, another 古早味 style. Reminds me of the taste from my hometown. After eating, we dabao one set for Quet and walked back to the hotel. Along the way, we walked past 3-4 other chicken rice balls shops with nobody inside. The queue was very long by the time we came out. 早起的鸟儿有虫吃, true indeed. If you have friends who wake up early, you can also enjoy the dabao 虫 :)
Tab and Quet went to a nearby shop to buy some paper cutting. I stayed in the room to bathe, changed and packed. We check out about 11.30am plus. Went on a scenic road using the directions of the GSP and ended up at Tan Kim Hock. My garlic peanuts no more, bought dried mango, ginger n coconut sweets. That cost RM$32. Drove more scenic road until Charlie. I bought 5 keuhs, 5 nonya dumplings, 5 savory rice thingy, a Penang achar and a Peranankan achar. A hefty RM$52 for all but how many times am I going to get to eat more authentic nonya stuff. Then we ate along the journey, the keuhs, plus potato chips. That 'turtle-shell' snack is addictive. The vegetable-potato one was also very good. Bought them both from the snackguy who supplies snacks twice a week at my workplace. He would carry in 3 boxes, the colleagues pick and choose.
We reached sg with little incidences here and there but back safely. I ate half of the Penang achar with rice for another lunch. Dinner was a nonya dumpling. Overall I felt it was a good trip. I really recharged mentally, dont feel the sadness from all the farewell, completely forgot about work and stuff. Just enjoyed the moment, the present. Ate lots of different a d delicious food. I calculated the entire trip costs me S$196 all-in. It's not expensive as my work parties are worse.
Monday I ate another no ya dumpling cos one of my sis didn't and didn't want to keep too long. It's very good, generous amount of fillings. Then monday's lunch and dinner for me was Weet-bix with low fat milk, unsugared. Filling just my mouth prefers savory to sweet stuff. So I ate a bit of the veg my mom cooked and also drank the soup for dinner. I was trying to work back all the excess calories consumed over the 3 days. Damage is really huge. I did go out to run some banking errands in Clementi as well as change some RM, both to return to Mom and also prepare for up-coming Genting trip. Decided to change for RM$1k cos I owe my mom RM$300,
then Genting is not a cheap place, so just a few hundred maybe is not enough. Us if I had extra leftover, I can use to pay my sister's share of upcoming dividends as some of her shares are under my share account. That cost me S$414.90. This month's saving is also lowered.
This morning, had toasted panini bread with leftover white Chinese radish. Plain but delicious. Lunch was a serving of Weet-bix and low fat milk, no sugar. But by 4.30pm, I got munchies. Ate some sticks of that leftover veg-potato snack leftover. Trying to resist more until dinner time. Watching anime and slacking around. Think I should do some weights at home. Broke my exercise routine so re-starting takes some effort and self-prodding.

Melaka trip - b4
I seriously cant remember which year it was, when Candle and I followed Tab and her parents into Malacca for a short trip. But this year, 2012, Tab, Quetzal and I made a journey there. The difference? We stayed right smack near the main Jonker area, in a Peranakan theme 3-star boutique hotel, among the rows of shop-houses in the Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lok, a street parallel to Jonker street.
I was searching for the Genting package for my family earlier and remembered that we had chatted earlier about going for a short trip to Malacca over the weekend when Tab and my holidays coincide. I searched for the hotels in Malacca. Selected straight the option under Jonker and saw the selection. Immediately my eye caught the 'Baba House' because it stood out as it's converted from those shophouses. Looked through what it was offered in terms of the facilities, the rates, the rooms. Msged the others, if they okay with the choice, shortly both okay and I made the booking using my debit card. Got a twin room, added a mattress, non-smoking 3D2N from Fri til Sun. The rate is $158 RM all-in per pax including for twin sharing. Extra mattress at $36. All-in we paid RM$400.05 (S$55.45 per pax) inclusive of a breakfast. The main draw was the experience of living in a Peranakan shophouses plus the proximity to Jonker, within walking distance. All set. I had RM$140 left and borrowed RM$300 from my mom first cos I was too mentally tired after work from Tue til Thur. I'll return her when I come back and go change money for the Genting trip.
The final few days were intense. Supposed to be few lessons but change time-table and got events which meant I was actually down for more periods than usual plus cca... Tiring. Then the final day on Fri was such a sad affair, the usual, students transferring out and going back, so many good students (from my advance classes) leaving. Luckily I had already given them the token present (a bookmark I printed, laminated and tied a ribbon) plus 2 snacks to each student from my classes. Kinda sad to see them go. It was even sadder when it came to the farewell speeches from all 15 colleagues leaving. When you have to sit there, even as some of the leaving teachers' voice broke when they are making their farewell speech. By the 4th, I was already trying to control the tearing up cos I worked with him very well for 2 years. Great colleague. Then wipe off with my fingers cos no tissue... Then calm down by 8th-9th only to restart tearing up again until the 15th cos students esp some female ones were crying. OMG!!! Then I realized I am NOT the only female teacher tearing up... But I kept trying to wipe the tears away and calm down, problem is once the tears come, they don't stop so quickly. Finally mostly cleared up by the end, and I went to the toilet to wash face and sit at toilet to do biz and calm down more. Really sad atmosphere.
I didn't go up to the extra-long homeroom after the farewell ceremony and stayed downstairs. When I brought up the valuables for the last 15mins, I was surprised at the end, I was also given a photo album by the form class. They prepared 3 photo albums and gave to each of us. After bus duty, I opened up to take a look. It was not an empty album, but full of pics of each student and a handwritten note in English. I read a few but stopped cos it was too much of an emotional day, didn't wanna tear up again. I felt a bit bad cos I didn't like my form class for English as much as the other classes I took. When I gave the token present to this class, I gave the bookmark and only 1 snack instead of 2 because there were 5-6 un-deserving students with bad attitude or not-on-tasks. I almost wanted to skip the whole class because the Jap way is to be equal; if I give one, I must give everyone in the class to be fair. I remembered and reminded myself that there are good students too so I 'docked' one snack for the overall. Cos there was no lesson left for the class party, I had to grab them during the free-time between classes to give to them individually, hence I was more tired. Some male students did complain that other classes got 2 but they got 1, I told them cos they werent as good. So they just nia-nia a bit and went back to class. So this was like on Wed. I'll read through the album when I am more rested and recharged mentally.
The final farewell is the usual light buffet we pay $15 for where the security guards, cleaners, office ladies and maintenance crew were invited to eat for free. Their share paid by us the staff as an appreciation and a show of teamwork (Jap very into the team-thingy) Ate a lot cos usually no time for breakfast and no early lunch for me. So very hungry. Ate mee goreng, fried chicken wings, beancurd sushi contributed by an ex-colleague who dropped by. After chatting a bit, went back to the staffroom, got more farewell presents from leaving colleagues. I got a whole bunch of Jap tidbits, teabags, 5 hankerchiefs over 2 years and lots of their namecards. I need to buy a namecard holder. Waited around until we can officially go off earlier, that was at 4pm. Before that I had made some extra bookmarks with the intention to give to most of the leaving colleagues especially the 2 whom I work with very closely this year. These 2 had different msgs hand-written behind. The others, I loomed through the 4 different msgs I wrote for students and omitted those with mention of Sec3 msg and gave out the other 3 that had a broader meaning than just congratualations for becoming sec3. Gave out to others whom I work with, not enough for all, but for most. Really mentally tired. But Quetzal and Tab not coming to fetch me straight from work, so I had to carry my stuff and wait back home. Shook hands with some and waved goodbye. Many told me to visit them in Japan, look them up when I finally go there. They can show me around, even stay with them. Great hospitality.
I reached home really mentally tired as it was really an emotionally-draining day. Waited for the car to pick me up for the trip to Malacca to recharge. I was really looking forward to recharging myself mentally. I dropped off the smart clothes I had to wear for the ceremony, picked up the money belt I forgot, dropped off more of the tidbits and workbag. Settled for just a sling and my travel bag (huge laptop backpack) instead. Waited and waited until I decided to lie down a bit waiting for a call.
Leave the rest for the next entry.

Dressing up for the graduation ceremony and final fafewell dinner
Finally it's the weekend. Wed had to dress formally, put on make-up, gel hair and wear contacts. First time all see me in contacts plus make-up and dressed smart, all together. My thinking was coz it's the last thing for the Sec3 graduating students. Also many staff leaving, no harm. Anyway I didn't have any role except sit there and clap and watch and bow. So wore long black pants with black sleeveless top. Then when the ceremony started, put on blue jacket and wore the court shoes.
Yesterday, as the Final farewell party, for the level that I have worked in, it was at 'One On The Bund' in Fullerton Bay Hotel (the converted Clifford Pier). The dress code is formal. I looked through the menu earlier, 8-course Shanghainese dinner. So I looked through my wardrobe and decided since Chinese food, wear the Cheong Sam top. My sis and I bought a different color each; mine was red, hers is black. So I borrowed the Black one, recycle the long pants and court shoes, use my tri-color (black, green, white) shawl. Do make-up, hair and put on contacts. Tada, formal (except I still carried my brown workbag, don't have any handbags but nevermind).
Man, having to bring all those make-up, contacts, hair spray and gel, top, pants, shawl to work in the morning is another matter. Had to endure my dad's early morning nagging cos he saw me carry the clothes in the clothing cover with hangers and asked. I say have to attend extremely pricey dinner and he went on and on about how it's important to attend, how he attended many when he was a lecturer blah blah. Until I told him to zip it and not talk about things he doesnt know well about (cos his dinners are paid by the staff welfare, mine is thru my own pocket) Things dont always have the same meaning when it's across cultures. I headed out ASAP to escape only to forget my contacts and had to come back.
Pass thru a day of lessons, then 3 of us were sharing cab from the workplace at 5.30pm. The dinner was set at 6.30pm. I went to the ladies to get ready at 4.30pm. Change, put on contacts, style hair, finally did make-up. I was thinking how so much hassle for a meal. Feels like how I feel going for wedding dinner. How it's a Friday and I wanna go out, relax instead. Instead of spending more than $100+++ to do this. Sigh, nevermind.
I looked at myself in the mirror. Definitely looked better and prettier but all these for a farewell dinner? Guess cultural difference do exist. I did have many colleagues, female office staff and security guards do a double take, surprised I dolled up. The sentence "穿这么美去那里?" asked. Then I would grimace and say is for the farewell lor. Then inside the staffroom, those who noticed, especially the girls would say nice in Jap. Well when all they see of you is polo-t, 3/4 pants, sport shoes, sport wear, sometimes t-shirt and jeans, being dressed up formally with make-up, contacts, styled hair, looking feminine is a different story. The contrast is too great not to notice.
Those who are leaving had left for a ceremony elsewhere. The same level colleagues would go straight to the hotel. Reached there and immediately received praises for the look. More like the difference is there. Just thank them for the compliments and smile, smile. I couldn't wait until it's over to wipe off the make-up. And take off the contacts. My eyes were super-dry from the air-con and had to put the eye-drops carefully, so as to avoid dropping on make-up face (grr even more hassle). Listened to more Jap conversation, the sole Aussie colleague is seated two seats away. Make some small talk here and there, take food pic, eat, taste and drink tea. The age gap is quite big, areas of interest also, mind-set and also many are married and have kids. Plus language barrier and different cultures. I am also not that keen to make small talk about useless stuff. If I want to know you as a person, I would ask more questions than just about superficial stuff. I did talk more later when we went to the Starbucks at the One Fullerton. Green Tea Latte with Non-fat Milk is delicious. Found that 2 other colleagues like that too.
After talking with 1-2 more colleagues seated beside me, at 10.30pm, I bid them bye and headed home. Reached home, glad finally back home. I'm sad to see some of them go. But for some, the MOE colleagues, finally they can go home. For those who face impending unemployment, sad for them but maybe better oppts for the younger ones, for the older ones is tougher. I might be a similar situation if my contract is not renewed... That's a fear and feeling of dread at the back of the locally hired non-jap, non-expatriate. Sigh

Sigh

Coming family trip / 2nd last week / Trying to count down
Last week, I was asking my mom whether she was available for a trip to Genting around my break period. Cos she has to go back during Qing Ming to sweep grave. After the date for the grave sweeping was finalized, she ask me to ask my dad whether he interested in the trip. By then my youngest sister didn't mind tagging along but bunk in with us.
So I spent some time finding out free n easy packages, 3D2N off peak that matches our timing. Called up to enquire about the details and get quotation etc. I presented the info to my dad and he surprisingly agreed to go very quickly. So that's 4 of us, going for twin-sharing. So we made that decision on Thur and on Sat, we headed over to the tour agency to sign and pay up. Offered to pay for my mom, cos she accompany me but she declined. Want to pay for herself. We also bought personal travel insurance. All settled, now left for the trip. FINALLY I am going somewhere. Even though it's Msia but I've never been to Genting, something to strike off my list. Hehehe bring my ATM along and some RM. Maybe I should change some but recent rates are not so good.
It's the 2nd last week of the term. Tom is the half-way mark. It's the graduation ceremony, have to wear formal. I got out my clothes, tom wake up earlier a bit to iron cos the steamer is in my sis's room and one of them is sleeping. Don't wanna wake her. Got ready my breakfast - grapes and lunch - leftover fried rice, some roasted pork and otak. Have to balance off with a Oven-roasted chicken breast wrap. Now I am trying harder to limit my Come Zero to just 1 can a day cos read an article about increased health risks from having 2 cans or more daily for women. Going to try harder to shift to Tea (Oolong, Pu-er etc) So far, with sheer will-power, resisted and kept at just a can. Thinking of going to the gym too after work. At the back of my head, I want to go out, redeem my Groupon deals but bolan jio and sometimes I wanna clear the exercise gym routine during weekdays. I blame this for the 2 consecutive work parties, 2 Fridays ago and just last Sat. Took up the time for me to head out, I'm starting to feel restless, like I need to be away from the people from work for a weekend to myself, family and friends, doing relaxing stuff, instead of having to dress, eat in a very unnatural atmosphere, trying to make small talks. It's more mentally and also physically tiring, as I had to make my own way there. First was a club in the middle of an industrial distict, gotta walk quite s distance to take bus and a long walk in. The Pink one, I had to take a 1.5th bus ride on Bus 10. I relented and shared a cab to reach home faster , 11.30pm.
Then Thur onwards I still have some lessons to go... Counting down.

A whole series of Farewell Parties - Bankrupt
A "Pok Gai" time (broke in Hokkien)
I only realized how unorganized or how many farewell parties Jap do tend to have. If I had known how much each would cost, I would be more hesistent to agree to go for the whole series.
So far within this 2 weeks, I have attended 2 farewell. One is the whole-school one $110 and $30 additional for the presents. This I went cos many of those whom I have worked with are going. Among them are those who joined the same time as I did. Their contracts not renewed, or they dont want to renew due to the poor pay, some even pay-cut. Forced to leave in a sense. It was an even more expensive "Zha Chai Rice" this year than last year cos I didnt drink last year. It tasted better but still most definitely not worth the price paid. Its paying for the private room, the stage and atmosphere. They each get a leaving present of their names in Chinese character plus a bouquet of flowers.
The second one which I have always skipped is the "Pink" party that is only open to the lady colleagues. This time, I worked very closely with the host and she will be leaving. She took special care to inform me of stuff, made sure I was accounted etc. Hence I shouldnt and couldnt say no. I looked at the paper. Basically its a pot-luck. Bring 1 item. So I agreed. In my mind, I decided to be a bit generous and order some nice cupcakes from my turned-baker ex-colleague. It was meant to be my "present" of sort to everyone who attended. Then Headless the one organizing later informed me that they are collecting $20 to buy a farewell for each of the leaving female colleagues. Grr.... Those cupcakes are not that cheap cos there were many people attending including for the host's family. But... nevermind. Never again. On top of that I was thinking of contributing some meat. Which I changed my budget from a whole chicken to just $6 of shrimp paste chicken from an economical rice stall after having to pay another $20 extra. So that meant $50+$20+$6+$7 = $83 inclusive of everything plus a shared taxi ride back home.
The Pink party was good, the host is very kind to keep refilling our cups etc. Her Thai green curry with mango salad was delicious. Ate until quite full. Many brought dessert too. But the show-stealer were the cupcakes I brought. Cos I asked my baker-colleague to make Hello Kitty and Roses for this "Pink" party, the colors are pinkish and definitely girlish. And I've realized how big fans of Kitty jap colleagues are. And the cupcakes taste as good as they looked. After the 'forced' talking - either talk for 5mins or answer questions, we headed back about 10.30pm ++ Shared a cab with 2 others.
The last farewell is the Level farewell. Again, I feel compelled to go because many in my level are leaving. There are just 4 of us left. So far havent hear anything about any extra costs. But the price tag is a hefty $100++, dinner is at a restaruant in Fullerton area. 8 course chinese (I scanned through the menu, saw Peking duck) and its formal attire... This on a Friday, I wanna to have free time on my weekends. Still have my groupons to eat. I wanna aim for the Kraze Burger soon.
Seriously this year, I really cut down the number of work parties I attended. In fact, I only attended 1 common, 2 level parties, 2 farewell for my 2 local colleagues, and these 3 last farewell-in-a-row. The problem is that there are quite a few pricey ones. If I had thought $80 was already too much. There are a few hitting more than $100++ So despite cutting down on the number of parties; There were 4 common ones, 2 Sec 3 farewell, 3-4 Sec2, 3 Pink etc, I still paid about $600. OMFG! That's the price of easily a PS3 and my Final Fantasy titles... Sigh, next year I will cut down on the farewell too. Just too much, not that much value especially that ZCP one.
